Crush Begins - Chardonnay for Sparkling Wine

In our constant pursuit of fine artisan winemaking that seeks to maximize the expression of our pristine region, Bellangelo has set out to craft its first ever sparkling wine. Made from Chardonnay vines that were planted in the 1970's from grafts of the original Charles Fournier vineyards in the Finger Lakes, these grapes are grown by Jeff Morris on one of the oldest blocks in his vineyard, located a few hundred meters from the lake on the sloping hills of the west side of Seneca Lake.

Once the grapes reached the winery, which is about 4 miles from the vineyard site, we conducted a whole cluster press, and separated the soft press juice from the harder press juice. The soft press will ultimately become the sparkling wine that we anticipate releasing in 2016, on the 150th anniversary of the first plantings at Bellangelo by Dr. Byron Spence.
